Today the complexities of adolescence, identity and the expectations of adulthood are explorations that we all face. The Troy Simmonds development program steps into these challenges, offering a model for growth that goes beyond athletic training. It is a framework for becoming.

The program develops physical skills and in unison supports boys to uncover the deeper alignment between their bodies, minds and values. Through three curated phases  –  Foundation, Development and Leadership, young men are given the tools to integrate strength, discipline and self-awareness. The results are stronger athletes and expanded humans capable of leading, relating and living with intention.

Each passage binds to the next imbuing physical training with deep mentorship, cultivating a mindset of hard work and humility as they strive toward their personal best.

PHASES

Laying the Groundwork for Growth

Adolescence can be turbulent.  Boys situated between the innocence of childhood and the intricacies of maturity are dealing with questions tricky to articulate: Who am I?  What am I capable of?  These years full of knotted transitions are where the Foundation phase begins.

This phase introduces boys to the fundamentals of movement, stability and discipline.  Using research-backed principles like Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation (DNS}, they learn how to move well from the ground up – building coordination, balance, posture and core strength. 

Additionally, the principles of Martial Arts, sprinting mechanics and somatic practices are unified playfully to incite challenge and curiosity. These foundational skills are responsible for physical confidence which vibrates into their emotional lives.

Boys are taught how to express themselves and mentored on how they might articulate their emotions. Through guidance and structured play, they learn to listen to their peers, articulate their needs and build the beginnings of emotional resilience.  They discover that strength is about self-control and connection. 

Refining Strength and Purpose

As boys grow into their mid-teens, their capacity for self-awareness and complexity deepens a little more.  This is where the Development phase is rooted.  It is a time for refinement of physical skill, emotional depth and intellectual curiosity.

Training becomes more demanding. They learn the art of movement through advanced practices like sprinting, plyometrics and explosive strength training.  They revisit the principles of DNS and are shown other forms of movement or practices that will help their sporting growth.  They begin to focus on efficiency and power yet are reminded to perpetually link in with the mental.  Each drill or practice becomes a lesson in focus, patience and how to manage the tension between effort and ease.

This phase is also about stepping into ownership.  Boys are encouraged to set their own goals, to think critically about their habits and to take responsibility for their growth.  They engage in discussions that stretch their minds and challenge their assumptions, fostering a curiosity about the world and their place in it.

Mentorship deepens during this time.  Older boys in Phase 3 model what it means to move through life with discipline and humility, creating an exceptional culture of intergenerational support.

Becoming a Steward of Others

By late adolescence, a young man’s focus can be centred on himself especially as he moves into elite sport teams and programs.  This is relevant as they strive for success, still the core of the Leadership phase is teaching boys to expand outwards, learning that true strength lies in service to others.

Here they persist in developing and deepening their practice, sharpening skills to move with purpose, whether it’s on the field or in the weight room.  They understand the value of focus, reliability and discipline with lessons centred around what they can do for their community.

Leadership is defined by responsibility.  Boys learn to mentor younger participants, offering guidance and feedback with empathy.  They practice leading by example, in how they speak, how they hold themselves and how they engage with challenges.  These experiences reinforce a truth that leadership is about listening and fostering union.

This is a time for profound self-reflection.  Boys are taught to examine their values, motivations, and relationships.

They begin to understand that how they train, how they talk and how they treat others are integrated parts of a whole life.
